Sadharmyam Research and Dialogue Centre is a unit of St. John's Province of the
Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), in the mission diocese of Bijnor, India.
Sadharmyam is a combination of two Sanskrit words (Sa+ dharma), meaning
sameness, likeness or co-existence of religions/ dharma i. e. same or similar in
nature or mission. Thus Sadharmyam stands for unity, equality, and oneness of
religious faiths and ideologies. Sadharmyam is a 'dialogical research'. The
harmony of dharma leading to religious and cultural unity is attained through
heart to heart dialogue and research (Jer. 29:13; Mt. 7:7) is oneness with ONE.
The centre started functioning in the township of Srinagar, the geographical,
cultural, educational, and political capital of Garhwal, in the year 1998. It is
a registered society under the Societies' Registeration Act XXI, 1860 known as
Sadharmyam Society.
Our vision and mission is to share God's love and fellowship of humanity by
delving into the depths of religions and ideologies, in a religio-cultural and
plural society through research and dialogue.
The Emblem
The symmetric-quadrangular outer design signifies Sri yantra, a geometric design
for high concentration, also seen as an abstract symbol of the Absolute, leading
to divine power and presence. This reminds the viewer also of a similar ancient
symbol of Sakta. A square in its four dimensions is basic to Indian thought that
the supreme Brahman is conceived as four-headed, with constant observation and
reception in all (four) directions. The Vedas are four in number; so also the
principal shrines ( dham) of Hindu religion. The different stages of life and
the ultimate ends of human existence in Hindu concept are also four. The four
doors of Sikh Gurudwaras welcome people of all beliefs into the communion of
Satsang, karseva and lankar. This outer design has a close resemblance to
Jerusalem Cross - the cross of Christ symbolising sublime love.
The complete/incomplete circle at the centre, when considered as complete circle
denotes fullness; also the circle of successive births and rebirths from the
bondage of lifeless materiality to liberation in Jainism, and the dynamic and
ever still wheel of Buddhism. And as semi-circle it stands for the Islamic
crescent. The triangle at the centre of the circle signifying the Holy Trinity
is also a basic geometric form standing for concentration ( ekagrata) and
realization of the Absolute. The two erect-invert triangles forming star points
to the Star of David, the official symbol of the Jewish religion, one of the
oldest in the world. The acme of the star and the triangle stand for the
Himalayan peaks of Garhwal where Sadharmyam is housed. Thus Sadharmyam
summarises the quintessence of religious and cultural co-existence, and unity
and oneness of dharma.
Activities
Our institution has been working in various ways towards fostering communal
harmony, like celebrating festivals of all religions and communities and
conducting seminars, study classes, symposia for the students, teachers and the
general public. In the year 2002 we conducted a national seminar on the R ole of
Religion in National Integration in which esteemed faculties of the north Indian
universities participated. The papers of the seminar have been brought into a
book titled Religio-cultural Plurality and Nation-state. It is a milestone in
our efforts to establish communal harmony and religious tolerance.
Some other programmes we conducted since 1998 are the following: Apart from the
joint feast celebrations of all the religions, we observe the world peace day,
Holy Childhood day, World Environment Day, World Population day, World Literacy
day, World tourism and Mental health day, and World AIDS day with group
discussions/ seminars/ symposia or extension lectures. We also conduct courses
on Science awareness and leadership skills for the school children. The language
coaching classes and the training in martial arts are the other attractive
programmes for the youth in Srinagar. We have been actively participating in the
pulse polio campaign since its establishment in Srinagar.
Publications
Sadharmyam also undertakes a publication house which has received ISBN
recognition. It has three books.
1. Religio-Cultural Plurality and Nation-State, J.P. Pachauri and J.D.
Chakkanatt, eds., Sadharmyam Publications, Srinagar, 2004.
It is the compilation of papers presented and views expressed in the national
seminar. Belief system in any nation-state with various creeds, need not
necessarily be at variance was the conclusion of the deliberation of the two-day
national seminar.
2. Public Action and Religious Praxis, John Dilip Chakkanatt, Intercultural
Publications, New Delhi, 2002.
It is a socio-religious inquiry into two cases of public action in the Garhwal
region and their implication for the self-understanding and praxis of the
Church. No individual or institution with a social conscience can afford to
remain indifferent to the deplorable conditions of fellow human beings. Every
society, awakened and led by even a few committed and charismatic leaders can
usher in meaningful changes through what is known as public action. The book is
an eloquent testimony to the wisdom of the above statement.
3. Of God and Mammon, John Dilip Chakkanatt, Intercultural publications, New
Delhi, 2001.
This book is about J.C. Kumarappa's religious theory of Economics as a
counterpoint to the religion of Economics.
SRDC has several musical albums. Sadharmyam encourages various art forms like
theatre, music dance etc.
Ritugeetam: Hymns for liturgical seasons. These psalms are composed and arranged
according to the seasons of Syro Malabar liturgical calendar and are suitable
for the Holy Qurbana.
Vachanamrutam: Hymns for dance and drama, Dramatization of Good Samaritan
incorporated.
Myoli: X-mas carols in Hindi, Sanskrit and Garhwali incorporated. Christmas
Carols sung in local language and idiom named Myioli, introduced for the first
time with the involvement of the local people, artists and students, made a
startling entry to the local culture.
